30,000 acres in Southeastern Kansas.

Where are
you located and what units do you operate in?
Our hunting are is North of Highway 166
between the towns of Sedan and Cedar Vale, Kansas. We hunt the productive
Caney River Valley in Chautauqua, Elk, and Cowley Counties. Our Archery
unit designation is A6 and our firearms unit is 12.

Describe the terrain in you area?
To those of you that have not visited this
part of the nations heartland, I can only stress that this is nothing like
the flat, treeless, prairie and farmland you might have envisioned Kansas
to be. Our hunt area is an amazing mixture of timber, agricultural fields,
native grass prairie and pastures along with great security cover. Plum
thickets, nasty coulees and rocky canyons, along with protective cedar
glades give deer plenty of places to hide. Add to this, scores of stock
ponds and flood control reservoirs and you have a trophy whitetail hunter's
paradise.

What about hunting
license and deer tags?
Hunting licenses are available over the
counter for about $70. Deer tags are $320 for a non-resident deer tag. You
must be successful in the drawing. The application period for the draw is
May 1st through May 31st. New for 2005 is an opportunity to send $20 and a
completed application to Kansas Wildlife and Parks and earn a preference
point without the possibility of actually drawing the tag. There is an
opportunity to purchase a very limited number of landowner transferable
permits from the owners of my ranches. One should expect to pay $750 to
$1000 for these coveted tags.

Where
would I stay if I hunted with Caney Creek Outfitters?
We provide clean and comfortable lodging
located on our ranch. Our farmhouse is our primary lodging. We also have
two mobile homes and a bunkhouse that allow further flexibility in arranging
accommodations for our guests. Click on the Lodge link to see the
facilities.

What methods of hunting do you
use?
We use comfortable Texas style tower box
blinds, ladder stands, double bull ground blinds, as well as lock-ons. The
stands are placed in prime locations base on experience and "up-to-date"
scouting. Our guides transport the hunters up to twice daily to and from
their stands. Hunters are welcome to drive their own vehicles to and from
their stands. Hunters are welcome to use their own stands if they prefer.

What about food plots and
baiting?
Baiting is legal in Kansas. On some of our
ranches, we us feeders to concentrate the does and draw bucks. This brings
bucks into the area during the rut. Some of our property has wheat, clover,
corn, and other crops the deer feed on. Our ranches are working cattle
ranches, with a limited amount of farming.
TOP
How many hunters do you
take each year?
We have arranged 15 deer hunters per year over
the past 5 years. We are happy to keep our operation small and deliver a
quality service. Last year there were only 24 transferable landowner
archery tags given out in our entire county. The difficulty in obtaining a
tag is a limiting factor in how many hunters we take each season. We are
not even beginning to hunt all of our acreage or impact the number of mature
bucks.
TOP
What do I do with my
deer once I harvest if?
We will transport your deer to the processor
free of charge. You will be responsible for the cost of processing
(currently $75). A skinning rack and all the essentials for processing your
own deer are available at camp if you wish to "do it yourself".
TOP
Is there a possibility of me harvesting additional game if I tag my buck
early?
Yes, hunters should make arrangements with us
prior to their hunt if interested in harvesting a doe on their trip. Game
tags are available over the counter for $20. We have turkey, ducks, geese,
quail, squirrel, and coyotes. A great farm pond is also available for
fishing. We downplay these activities during deer season, as we don't want
you or your guides to lose focus of our priority, getting every hunter in
camp an opportunity to take a quality whitetail buck.
TOP
How do I
book a hunt?
To book a hunt 50% of the hunt price is
required as a deposit. The balance of the hunt is due 60 days prior to the
start of your hunt. No refunds of deposits will be made. However, if you
cancel more than 60 days in advance of your hunt, you may use your deposit
toward a future hunt.
